NEXT BUISNESS MEETING:     September 8, 2010

MONTHLY DINNER MEETING:      September 22, 2010

President's/Vice President's Message August 2010

Hello everyone

Another month has passed by and summer is definitely moving at an accelerated pace this year. I believe some hot weather did arrive, finally, but sounds like it will be short lived. This seems to be the coolest August on record. I'm not complaining, I like it very much and hope it continues. It is my hope that this letter finds you all well and happy.

Again I'd like to pass on some personal safety information trusting that by doing so prevents you, your friends and love ones from becoming a victim. Here it is:

Safety Tips for Seniors

It's a tragic fact, but predators frequently target senior citizens. Looking for easy targets, they often believe they can take advantage of elderly individuals. That's why it is so important for seniors to take notice of useful safety tips.

Avoid Danger
One of the easiest safety tips a senior can use is to simply display confidence. Since criminals are looking for victims who appear to be timid, they are far less likely to assault someone who is confident and alert. Those who walk with purpose, and hold their head up instead of shuffling feet and staring at the ground are simply not as attractive as targets. Whenever possible, go out with other people, or at least stick to areas where large crowds are present. Predators are unlikely to strike if there are others around.

While shopping, try to park as close to the destination as possible, and always stop in a well-lit area. Muggers hide in dark spots where there aren't many people around so they won't have witnesses. Women should keep a close eye on their purses, but it isn't necessarily a good idea to hang the strap around the neck. Purse snatching is a very common crime, and thieves may knock someone over to get what they want. When done shopping, make sure hands aren't too full with packages and bags, and keep keys out upon approaching the vehicle to be ready to get in and drive away quickly.

Worst Case Scenario
Sometimes, despite our best efforts, a criminal will set their mind on an attack and nothing can prevent it.

A senior citizen self defense class can teach some basic, but highly effective moves that are designed to catch an assailant off guard and give an opportunity to get away safely. There are many different personal defense classes, including courses in how to defend using items most people commonly carry. Some seniors have even learned how to turn their walking canes into very powerful weapons.

Senior citizens may also choose to carry a non lethal self defense weapon. Such as pepper spray or a Taser.

Although it is important to do everything to avoid danger and prevent a confrontation, it is also essential to realize that if an attacker is carrying a gun, knife or any lethal weapon, the best option is to cooperate. There may be a loss of money or personal items, but nothing of it is worth risking life and limb.

Take care, and see you at the dinner meeting.

Rich Boswell

Secretary's Message

Summer has definitely arrived.  Boy, has it been hot and humid!  The monsoons will be coming this month, so stay hydrated and keep as cool as possible.  Stay indoors or do outside work early in the morning or late in the evening.

Desert Thunder will be in September at Primm.  Tickets are available for the grand prize of a custom Harley. Tickets are $10.00 with only 5000 tickets to be sold.  We will be leaving Thursday, September 16 in order to have time to set up. Friday, September 17 and Saturday, September 18 will be the main days, and we'll be  leaving  on Sunday morning.  Frank Doherty has the sign-up sheet for the times.   See Frank at the dinner meeting.

School will be starting at the end of this month.  Students will be everywhere, so be careful when driving near a school.  They do strange things and dart out in many places.

Congratulations to the new Board members and officers for 2010-2011.  Our new Grand Director is Don Escher.  Look for many good programs and activities to come this year.

Dues were due July 1. Thank you to all who and paid them on time.  I have the membership cards and will be collecting any dues that have not been paid yet at the dinner meeting August 25 at Sizzler.

See you there.

Lynne Vest, Secretary

LAW ENFORCEMENT HUMOR

911 in the South

Believe it or not, these are Memphis, Tennessee's REAL 911 Calls!

Dispatcher: 9-1-1 What is your emergency?
Caller: I heard what sounded like gunshots coming from the brown house on the corner.
Dispatcher: Do you have an address?
Caller: No, I have on a blouse and slacks, why?

Dispatcher: 9-1-1 What is the nature of your emergency?
Caller: I'm trying to reach nine eleven but my phone doesn't have an eleven on it.
Dispatcher: This is nine eleven.
Caller: I thought you just said it was nine-one-one
Dispatcher: Yes, ma'am nine-one-one and nine-eleven are the same thing.
Caller: Honey, I may be old, but I'm not stupid.

Dispatcher: 9-1-1 What's the nature of your emergency?
Caller: My wife is pregnant and her contractions are only two minutes apart
Dispatcher: Is this her first child?
Caller: No, you idiot! This is her husband!

And the winner is............

Dispatcher: 9-1-1
Caller: Yeah, I'm having trouble breathing. I'm all out of breath. Darn....I think I'm going to pass out.
